A fairly common fault on this very popular model, the Canon A1. After several decades of service, it is not unusual for the camera to start draining batteries too quickly. Simply cleaning the stack of contacts in the battery-test button resolves the problem in most cases.
This fault is fairly easy to diagnose if you have a multimeter to hand. Everyone should have one at home: it is very useful. You will also need to find something suitable for making a pair of thin metal strips to insert into the battery compartment.
