Here is a short video tutorial (15min) showing how to replace the door on a Canon AE1 Program. It also applies to other Canon A-series models (A1, AE1, etc.). These doors break easily, and age does not help: the plastic hardens and eventually becomes brittle. A piece of tape holding the door shut is often the best and cheapest solution. If you have access to a replacement part, though, replacing it is worthwhile. They sometimes turn up on eBay at exorbitant prices. You can even find 3D-printed versions now, but the quality is often disappointing. Removing the top cover makes the work easier. This is quite manageable for a beginner, provided they have the necessary tools.
